Case Study: From Data Recovery to a More Secure Business IT Environment

A successful data recovery job can solve an immediate problem, but it can also reveal wider risks within a business’s technology environment.
Rabbit MSP was initially contacted by a small business that needed assistance recovering important data.
After successfully completing the recovery, we followed up to confirm that the client was satisfied and discussed some of the other IT services available to support their business.
This conversation led to a broader review of their computers, security software and network equipment.
Replacing Ageing Windows 10 Computers
The client was using ageing computers that were still running Windows 10.
With Windows 10 reaching the end of standard support, the business decided to replace two of its older systems rather than continue investing in ageing hardware.
Rabbit MSP sourced two custom-configured ASUS NUC Pro computers suited to the client’s requirements.
The compact systems were selected to provide strong business performance while taking up very little workspace.
One of the computers was installed upside down beneath a desk because of limited available space. The small form factor of the NUC allowed the system to be mounted securely while keeping the work area clear.
What We Found During the IT Review
While completing the installation, we carried out a broader review of the business’s technology.
We identified several areas requiring attention:
Windows 10 computers approaching end of support
Outdated antivirus protection
An ageing TP-Link modem/router
Default or weak router credentials
Router firmware that had not been updated since installation
Limited protection against spam and phishing emails
Older routers can become a significant security risk when firmware is no longer updated or known vulnerabilities remain unpatched.
Compromised routers and other internet-connected devices are commonly targeted by botnets, which use infected devices to generate malicious traffic or attack other systems.
The Solution
Rabbit MSP:
Replaced two ageing Windows 10 computers
Supplied and configured two ASUS NUC Pro systems
Mounted one computer beneath the desk to accommodate limited space
Migrated the users’ data and business applications
Provisioned ESET Protect Complete across the organisation
Enabled centrally managed endpoint security
Added ESET Cloud Office Security protection for Google Workspace
Updated the router to the latest available firmware
Replaced the existing router credentials with secure, complex credentials
Reviewed other security gaps within the environment
Although the router was updated and secured, its age means it should not remain in service indefinitely.
We recommended replacing it within approximately six months and will follow up with the client as part of their ongoing IT review.
The Outcome
The business now has two modern computers running a supported operating system, centrally managed endpoint protection and improved email security.
The client has also experienced a substantial reduction in unwanted and malicious email following the implementation of ESET Cloud Office Security.
Other risks, including outdated router firmware and insecure credentials, have also been addressed.
What began as a one-off data recovery job became an opportunity to improve the reliability and security of the client’s wider IT environment.
